Biography unit: persevering in the face of challenges
This spring we will continue our work with the Reading and Writing Project by introducing a themed biography unit: persevering in the face of challenges. As a class we will read inspiring stories about real people who've overcome challenges to make a difference in the world. Students will also read a biography from the "Who is...?" series, discussing the biography in book clubs.
Students will write about a time they (or someone they know) overcame a challenge by holding onto their beliefs or reaching out to their community. Their story will be published in a class book that we will share with the library.
Students will also create a quilt to be displayed in the hallway of Montlake. The quilt will be made up of individual squares where the students represent the themes in the biography they are reading.
