Family Activities
Echo Lake Elementary appreciates the contributions you make to your child's education. Throughout this unit, we have exciting opportunities for families to get involved. We will be looking for volunteers for the following activities:
We will also assign three home assignments during this unit. Home assignments are designed to inform you of what your child is learning, and also bring knowledge from home into our classroom. The three home assignments are listed below with a brief description, and a downloadable worksheet for each assignment.
1. Basic Needs Concept Map: In class, students will create a concept map of the basic needs of the Northwest Coast people. To show a comparison between 1800 and today, please fill out a new concept map with your child. You will be exploring how you meet the needs of community, shelter, clothing, and food. We will use this information to compare and contrast in class.
- Volunteer to play the part of a trader (1 person), new settler (1 person), or Governor Isaac Stevens (1 person) for our critical incidents.
- Participate in the First Salmon Ceremony celebration at the end of the unit.
- Volunteer for a field trip to the Arboretum or the Museum of History and Industry

2. Family Reading Guide: We will be reading Northwest Coast legends in class throughout the unit. Studying the structure of these stories will allow students to create their own legend during the unit. Your child will be bringing home a Northwest Coast story to share with you. We hope you will enjoy reading the story together. Please complete the reading guide with your child to deepen their understanding.

3. Family Member Biography: In this social studies unit, students will take on a character that they will role play during lessons. In order to do this, they will develop an extensive biography for their character. They will go into detail about the personality, roles, and life experiences of their character. This can be a challenging process for students. To help broaden their understanding of biographies, your child will be interviewing one family member and creating a biography of him/her.
